2019 Satisfaction Syrah

2019 Satisfaction Syrah
Buy Now: $40.00

Satisfaction Syrah is 100% Amalie Robert Estate grown Syrah. Among our 35 acres of Pinot Noir, we have planted 0.80 acres (1,188 vines to be exact) of Syrah. This planting represents 4 clones selected for the cool Northern Rhône area of Côte Rôtie, and now Dallas, Oregon.

We grow Syrah right alongside Pinot Noir, and most of the vineyard work is very similar. The primary difference is that we have to wait until November to harvest. We think it is worth the wait.

Syrah is a very adaptive variety, and much like Pinot Noir, reflects its growing conditions. Syrah is grown in the hottest parts of the southern Hemisphere where it is known as “Shiraz” and a bit farther south into the cool climate of New Zealand as well. The entire west coast of the United States grows Syrah from California, to the warm areas of eastern Washington and now very small plantings in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

However, the birthplace of Syrah seems to be the Northern Rhône Valley. Recent DNA research shows Syrah to be a cross between Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. Both of these varieties are indigenous to France. Syrah is planted from the cool regions of the Northern Rhône where it is bottled as a single varietal, to the tip of the Southern Rhône where it is often blended with other varietals.

The Vintage: It all comes down to September. It used to be October, but things have changed and as farmers we are along for the ride. Vintage 2019 was a moderate growing season with adequate amounts of sun, wind, rain and wind all properly folded into the mix. Until September. That’s when we recorded a record amount of rainfall from the beginning to the end of the month. Of course, it was just lovely from there on out and that is when we were out Cluster Plucking.

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

As the vines matured, high quality wines from both cloneswere grown in the valley, but the Pommard clone was gaining widespread acclaimand notoriety.

There is a very good reason the Pommardclone was catching on. The Pommard clone represents all that is inherentlybeautiful in Pinot Noir. It is grown on all types of soils and is unique in itsability to reflect vineyard specific splendor, nuances and vintage conditions. While the eyes are the window into the soul, the Pommard clone expresses theinherent beauty of our vineyard through the lens of the vintage.

As the wine maturates in barrel, we arecontinually "thieving" and evaluating each barrel. While written records arevery important, especially as we age, our mental and physical impression ofeach wine drives us. As each sample istasted and re-tasted, we begin to better understand what each blend representsand the promise it holds for future development.

While The Reserve is a blend of ourvery favorite barrels from the vintage, the Pommard clone blend represents ourvery best expression of vintage and vigneron.

As is the case withall of our Pinot Noirs, this bottling is 100% Estate grown and hand harvestedfruit. The individual blocks were fermented with whole clusters and indigenousyeast from the vineyard. In the cellar, we aged the individual lots in Frenchoak barrels for a minimum of 18 months. The blend is a reflection of our soils, microclimates and stewardship of the land.

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

This variety is at first lush and playful. Richness on the palate leads to a sense of enchantment. Lest you be confused, Our Muse is at the same time stiff in the spine and not to be taken whimsically.

Viognier is the traditional white wine from Condrieu in the Northern Rhône Valley of France. This variety develops beautiful and delicate aromatics with a rich unctuous mouth feel when grown in Oregon’s cool Willamette Valley. Among our 35 acres of Pinot Noir, we have planted just 0.41 acres (594 vines to be exact) of Viognier.

The wine was fermented at cool temperatures in a very small stainless steel tank to retain its delicate aromatics. Viognier is a wine that favors enjoyment upon release, much like your inner child.

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

Based on recent DNA “fingerprinting”, an early Pinot vine and a vine called “Gouais Blanc” are the parents of Pinot Meunier and other varieties, including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The name “Meunier” is a French word meaning “the miller”. This term is given to Pinot Meunier due to the distinctive, flour-dusted appearance on its leaves.

What is it like as a still wine? Pinot Meunier was traditionally used to make sparkling wine, however as a still wine it is very similar to Pinot Noir. Pinot Meunier is appreciated for its aromatics, fruitiness, soft tannins and spicy finish. It is a varietal that provides its most pleasure when consumed within 3 to 5 years of the vintage.

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

The vines were brought into Oregon direct from Burgundy just about the time we were establishing the vineyard at Amalie Robert Estate. The block has 1,089 vines of Dijon Clone Chardonnay, with the field blend favoring clone 76 over 95. The rootstock is still that mother of all rootstocks, 5C.

The primary fermentation of sugar to alcohol is still done without oak influence. Stylistically, the Her Silhouette was colloquially known as “No Oak, No Malo”. We have moved on. And you can too! All it takes is a little bacterium and all of that malic acid becomes lactic acid. If that sounds yummy, it’s because it is. Lactic acid is the acid in goat's milk, and you get yummy goat cheese from goat's milk. Malic acid is from your granny’s “screamin’ greenies” green apples that she grew out on Boone’s Farm road.

The Malo to Lactic (ML) conversion happens virtually all the time in red wines. In white wines winemakers typically have a choice to encourage or discourage this conversion. Mistakes (known as uncontrolled experiments or, sometimes, successful failures) happen all the time in winemaking. In some circumstances, you will have the ML conversion whether you want it or not. The opposite is also true. You can wish in one hand and wait in the other, but it’s just not going to happen. Maybe next year, but that’s a long time to wait.

We made the stylistic (and intentional) choice to change our ML program in 2019. Over the last 20 years or so, we have noticed our site affords a bit of a Sancerre expression in our Chardonnay that provides some intrigue. Ernie wanted to try and expand on that, while better integrating and softening the screamin' greenie experience. That, and Dena said we are not planting any Sauvignon Blanc.

So as part of our unquenchable thirst for knowledge and unabated appetite for risk, Ernie said, “What the Hell, let’s give it a try!” And that is how we arrived at the Dijon Clones Chardonnay - "No Oak, Full Malo".The Dijon Clones of Chardonnay are the new vines on the block. Block 24 has 1,089 vines of Dijon Clone Chardonnay, with the field blend favoring clone 76 over 95. The rootstock is still that mother of all rootstocks, 5C.

While most stainless steel fermented Chardonnay is of the “No Oak, No Malo” regime, we have moved on. And you can too! You just grow your own. That’s legal, now, in Oregon. And, as it turns out, that is a good thing.

Gewurztraminer is one of the most aromatic of the aromatic white wine varieties that also include Riesling and Viognier. The unadulterated aromas of Gewurztraminer are unrivaled and we simply could deny ourselves no longer. It was the Spring of 2013 when Ernie planted 25 vines that would bare our fruit. One fell prey to a gopher. Undeterred, he pressed on – without said gopher.

This wine was made in the most minimalist way possible. We hand harvested the clusters, which is harder than any other variety due to the exceeding short stem. The clusters were then eased into our press and gently encouraged to “Give it up!” And they did. The juice was settled overnight and then gently flowed into an inert fermentation vessel where a fortnight of flocculation began forthwith.

Not every winery does it, but if you start wandering around the Willamette valley during harvest time you may get the opportunity to discover a winemaker’s experiment. Something fermenting that is not quite ready for prime time, but is showing great promise. In our case, the little fermentation vessel under the lab table made lab work an aromatic pleasure!

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

Both the Satisfaction and Top Barrel Syrah wines have been released. This is something other. In winemaking, you can research and postulate all you want, but until you actually put 60 gallons of wine into a $1,200 barrel and wait a couple of years, you don’t really know. Well, now we know. This particular cooper’s barrel was not ready to show us its magic after 2 years, or 3 years. Ernie became concerned at the 4 year mark, as that is the typical barrel maturation period of the most celebrated Côte Rôtie Syrah wines. But he wouldn’t let it go. Hope springs eternal, and by spring 2023 the planets had aligned to where we could finally Waft The Fruit! (Single barrel production, 24 cases)

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.

Or as Dena would explain it: “This wine wraps you in an elegant silk scarf and instantly makes you feel really good - about being you.”

The wine was fermented in a single large format French oak barrel or “puncheon.” The goal of this fermentation is to enhance the breadth and depth of the wine through contact with oak and extended yeast or “lees” aging.

Stylistically, this wine is made to be enjoyed throughout its time in bottle. Upon release the wine is fresh with pungent aromas and a broad mouth feel, followed by a crisp and satisfying finish. We expect this wine to age gracefully for several years and will reward a laddered approach to monitoring its development.

The Chardonnay for this wine is estate grown in 1 small block. The blend is about half Dijon clone 76 and half Dijon clone 95.

Visit Shop by Vintage to see additional products in this category.
